ladders for cleaning windows?
josiejump1 asked:
I'm going to buy my boyfriend a ladder so he can clean the upstairs windows and while he is at it he can clean the guttering out as i think it is blocked. I have seen a 22 foot triple extension ladder and was wondering if this would be ok as i don't know how much of a slope the ladder should be. The guttering to the floor is 18 foot so would this ladder be ok.

The ladder will be too short to use safely for cleaning the gutter. When calculating the amount of ladder one needs, the angle is figured as 1/4 of the working length. Thus, 22 / 4 = 5.5, and 22- 5.5= 16.5. This puts him up under the soffit, reaching up to work blindly on the gutter, and THAT is one of the best ways to fall off of a ladder! I would recommend either: a) a longer ladder, or b) a telescoping gutter cleaning wand that attaches to a hose and can be used while on the ground.

extension ladders usually give the total length of the sections, but the sections must overlap 3 rungs (feet)…
my extension ladders are nominally 16, 28 and 32; but working lengths are 13. 25 29…the 28ft reaches the 21 foot gutter where there is no slope, but i must use the 32ft where there's a slope away from the foundation…
with your 18 foot gutter, id go for the next longest size…
